The Blues and Golds Awards recognise and celebrate the highest degree of sporting, cultural, community and arts achievement, among University of Otago students.
The original award of a “Blue” (celebrating sporting success) has been around since 1908, with a “Gold” award (acknowledging arts and cultural success) making an appearance in 2002. Over the years, additional awards have been added to celebrate the remarkable achievements of students.

The 5th Human Resources International Conference (HRIC) is hosted by the Department of Management at the University of Otago in Dunedin, in conjunction with the HR Division of the Academy of Management.
The conference will take place on 10–12 January 2024 in the Otago Business School, with a series of presentations, professional development workshops and a doctorial consortium.

In 2022 James Higham and his team were awarded a joint seed research grant by He Kaupapa Hononga (HKH), Otago Energy Research Centre (OERC) and the Transport Research Network (TRN) to undertake the research project “Conference timing: Optimising for targeted impact”.
This team of researchers set out to develop and pilot a prototype optimisation tool that would allow conference organisers to optimise the timing of conference activities. Such a tool aims to address a key barrier to virtual conference attendance to further advance progress towards new low-carbon academic conference conventions by better catering for online conference delegates.
In this seminar, James Higham, Ray O’Brien, Richard Wang, and Sherry Tseng will share their experiences and findings from their research project.

We found that, on the whole, students learn little about TOW, mana whenua, and how it relates to the programmes they are studying. The exceptions are individual lecturers who champion TOW, and optional papers that often have small student numbers.
Students are critical of what they see as tokenistic content in their courses, and instead aspire to greater opportunities for place-based, problem-based, and future-focused education, which better prepares them for global citizenship.

This talk proposes that we have underestimated science fiction’s capacity to represent and critique science and the technological power it wields.
When Joseph Conrad called H G Wells the “realist of the fantastic” he set surprisingly durable terms for understanding science fiction’s relationship to actuality. Scholars have argued since about whether the genre principally extrapolates from the present, or speculates on what other economic/political/cultural configurations might be possible.
This talk, by contrast, traces the genre’s long tradition of mocking human self-centredness. Recentring our understanding of SF on satire may offer a way to reframe Amitav Ghosh’s notion of “the peculiar forms of resistance that climate change presents” to “serious” fiction.
For many decades, science fiction’s satiric thrust was Menippean, oriented chiefly against an exaggerated sense of humankind’s importance (do you think the world revolves around you?). But the nature of that satire has changed as writers struggled with the fact that humans truly had a world-altering and world-destroying capacity. In the 20th century, the human capacity to destroy the world (atomically, mainly) was satirized by Capek, Lem, Vonnegut, Le Guin and others.
This lecture, after tracing that legacy, assesses SF’s newfound capacity to satirize humanity’s present destructive power principally by way of N K Jemisin’s The Fifth Season, set in a world where people control and create earthquakes with their minds.

A seminar by Jamie Gurney, GNS Science.
Seismicity in the Otago and Southland regions during the 19th, and first four decades of the 20th, centuries is poorly documented in published catalogues and scientific literature. Using newspapers and contemporary felt reports, a more complete database of felt historical earthquakes has been constructed, potentially increasing the continuous record of known seismicity in the two regions from 85–90 years to approximately 160 years. Although defining the seismic parameters for these earlier earthquakes poses a significant challenge, the addition of 75 years of previously unknown seismicity may assist evaluation of existing seismic hazard assessments

Dr Miga is an Assistant Professor in the Biomolecular Engineering Department at UCSC, and an Associate Director of the UCSC Genomics Institute. In 2019, she co-founded the Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) Consortium, an open, community-based effort to generate the first complete assembly of a human genome.
Additionally, Dr Miga is the Director of the Reference Production Center for the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium (HPRC).

X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:Green hydrogen as a renewably sourced energy vector, is presented as a technological solution for carbon reduction pathways.
Currently a small-scale technology, green hydrogen’s potential is restricted to its claims made by associated experts. Claim making is an important part of technological development as it helps us to imagine the future capacity of a technology. Claims are not neutral but are influenced by how we understand the present, and the problem that the technology in question is trying to solve.
In 2022, I interviewed a range of green hydrogen ‘experts’ across New Zealand through GNS’ Green Hydrogen Programme. This analysis suggests that how experts understand the relationship between technology and society has an affect on how they imagine the role of green hydrogen in New Zealand’s energy transition.
As an easy energy replacement for fossil fuel dependant industries and technologies, green hydrogen generates concern as well as optimism. Supportive green hydrogen claims promote a ‘business as usual’ approach that overlooks contemporary social dynamics. Critiques of this narrative suggest that a just energy transformation requires an image of the future where technologies like green hydrogen are used to alleviate social and environmental inequities rather than perpetuating them.
Dr Abbi Virens is a social scientist whose work falls under the area of Science and Technology Studies. She is interested in how materials behave as social actors, how they influence and are influenced by social dynamics.
Abbi is originally from Canada, but she completed her PhD at Otago in 2022 at the Centre for Sustainability. Her thesis explored Dunedin’s contemporary and past relationships with wild food foraging and mahinga kai.
Abbi has continued working at the Centre as post-doctoral fellow with GNS’ Green Hydrogen Programme, exploring the social dynamics of a potential green hydrogen transition in New Zealand. She is also a post-doc on the community-based research team, Project Kainga, which is working with seven marae communities helping them to formulate individual climate change adaptation plans.

He predominately use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and behavioural assessments to investigate patient responses to drug treatment.
To date, he has undertaken research with patient groups who’ve suffered from schizophrenia, depression, anxiety or addiction to methamphetamine or the opioids. He has also undertaken clinal trials to investigate the metabolism and quantify the effects of other recreationally used drugs on the brain.
Unfortunately, a significant number of patients don’t respond well to first – or even second-line drug treatments so his overall aim is to improve patient outcomes by identifying biomarkers that could be used to predict an individual’s response to the drugs used in psychiatry.

In 1995 he completed his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Otago. After a period as a Research Officer with InterAg, a veterinary pharmaceutical company, he became a Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutics at the University of Auckland, and following this a Senior Research Scientist at AgResearch.
Craig’s research focuses on bioactive delivery, and he is an author on over 120 research publications and 16 patents (6 granted in the USA). Craig has been awarded many honours and distinctions including an OECD fellowship, The Chiasma, Uniservices and Ideas Challenge prizes of the Spark Ideas Entrepreneurship Challenge, the Waikato Agribusiness Innovation Awards Supreme Winner and the Controlled Release Society’s Outstanding Veterinary Paper.
Craig has a wide range of formulations experience over many years, clustered around three key areas; Veterinary Pharmaceutics, Agriculture, and Nutraceuticals, currently with a strong focus on electro-spinning/spraying and 3D printing. He leads the Ag/Vet Controlled Release lab, which researches agri and veterinary controlled release formulations. Craig is also a member of Food Waste Innovation, a University of Otago Research Theme which measures food waste, develops reduction strategies, applies innovative technology, and works to modify producer and consumer behaviour.

He has developed security technology that tracks the provenance of data as it is processed by interacting computer systems. This ensures that the users’ data management policies can be upheld: e.g. sensitive data can be protected from exfiltration attacks, and data sovereignty requirements can be supported. This work applies particularly to cloud computing, in which the cloud provider becomes an additional stakeholder in software systems. He is interested in computationally and energy efficient large-scale data processing techniques, for example speeding up reconstruction of 3D landscape models from geospatial measurements using high performance computing clusters. His research also investigates potential social impacts of software systems, such as determining how compliance to regulation can be demonstrated, and reducing risks caused by recommender systems within social media platforms.

He currently leads a Marsden-funded study to understand the genetic basis for the evolution of truffle-like fungi. Other current research focuses on discovering and describing new species of native mushrooms.
David curates the fungal and slime mould collections in the Otago Regional Herbarium and adds to this collection through the annual New Zealand Fungal Foray.
David shares his passion for plants and fungi through teaching at all levels. He has been President of the Fungal Network of New Zealand since 2004 and the Head of the Department of Botany since 2017.

His research involves the understanding of proteins as potential drug targets, and their role in disease, particularly infectious disease. He is part of several multidisciplinary teams covering numerous infectious diseases as well as cancer.
He is currently Associate Dean (International) for the Division of Health Sciences.

The inaugural Ira Rangahau took place in 2018, spearheaded by Associate Professor Phillip Wilcox (Ngāti Rakaipaaka, Rongomaiwahine, Ngāti Kahungunu ki te Wairoa). Since then, it has become a significant fixture in the Genetics Otago calendar. Building upon its success, the Ira Rangahau 2021 symposium saw the inclusion of Dr Alana Alexander (Ngāpuhi: Te Hikutu, Pākehā) and Dr Catherine Collins (Kāi Tahu, Pākehā) on the organising committee. This event expanded its reach by adopting a hybrid format, accommodating both in-person and online participation.
The 3rd Ira Rangahau Symposium will be held over a full day on 10 July 2023 at the Dunedin campus. This event will once again convene Māori kairangahau (researchers) from around the motu to present their genetics-related research spanning diverse domains from the primary sector to health, to whakapapa and te taiao (the environment). We also welcome another researcher to our organising committee, Dr Nathan Kenny (Te Ātiawa, Ngāi Tahu).

In this presentation Lily will be sharing her journey that led to the innovative community project Free Ride based in Naenae, Lower Hutt.
Free Ride was established in response to the building of a new cycleway adjacent to the main Hutt Valley railway line which passes through Naenae.
Lily realised many in her community, especially rangatahi wouldn’t be able to access this cycleway as they couldn’t afford a bike and there were no local provisions, so she established The Free Ride Workshop.
Free Ride supplies refurbished bikes to the local community, runs bike mechanic tutorials and bike safety classes.
In this free online Transport Research Network (TRN) seminar Lily will talk about her experiences of running this community project and their future plans.

How can we understand the increase in climate disruptions and converging crises as examples of environmental and climate injustice?
This talk will address two different conceptual issues stemming from the climate and environmental crises:
This public lecture is presented by Professor David Schlosberg who is the Director of the Sydney Environment Institute and Professor of Environmental Politics at the University of Sydney.
Professor Schlosberg's main theoretical interests are environmental politics, environmental movements, and political theory, and in particular the intersection of the three with his ground-breaking and highly-cited work on environmental, ecological, and multispecies justice.
Professor James Robert Flynn (28 April 1934–11 December 2020), Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand was the Foundation Professor of Political Studies at Otago in 1967. An American-born New Zealand moral philosopher and intelligence researcher, he is noted for his publications about the continued year-after-year increase of IQ scores throughout the world, which is now referred to as the Flynn effect.
He wrote a number of books on moral and political matters, including a treatise on climate change. In addition to his academic work, he championed social democratic politics throughout his life.
