Ron Paterson, Professor of Health Law & Policy, University of Auckland
This lecture draws on my experience of handling patient complaints as Health and Disability Commissioner 2000-10 and my new book, The Good Doctor: What Patients Want. I argue that patients in New Zealand cannot confidently rely on professionalism or regulatory oversight to ensure good care. I discuss examples of lapsesin professionalism and examine contributory factors. I present a ‘prescription for change’ that seeks to support professionalism, while giving patients and the public justified assurance of competence.
