NZIFST Australia & New Zealand Sensory & Consumer Symposium

This symposium is designed to provide new inspiration and knowledge for sensory and consumer professionals. This symposium is an excellent platform for New Zealand and Australian sensory and consumer researchers and professionals to interact with international science leaders in this field, learn about the newest developments in research methods, and network and exchange ideas.

Our international guest speaker this year is Professor David Thomson

  • “Why we do what we do – An introduction to the duality of reward hypothesis”
  • “The nature of influence of emotion – How emotion is captured in consumer research”
  • “Sensory Branding – Optimising branding, packaging and product across key touch points”

Prof. Thomson is the founder (1989), principal owner and now Chairman of the MMR Group of Companies (Mathematical Market Research Ltd) and Visiting Professor at the University of Reading (UK).

With turnover of ~£40 million (unconsolidated) for the year ending March 2016, MMR is one of the largest (truly) independent market research companies in the World with global contracts to supply many well-known multinational companies. Thomson’s main area of scientific interest/expertise is in the psychology of consumer behaviour. One of his key roles in MMR is to head the research group that explores the motivators of human behaviour and consumer choice, with a view to translating this knowledge into commercially useful methodologies. Professionally, he is a frequent key-note speaker at international conferences on Sensory & Consumer Science and Emotion. Recreationally, he speaks widely on the ‘Sensory Delights of Single Malt Scotch whisky’.

We also have Anne Hasted running two workshops covering aspects of consumer test design.

Anne Hasted is the founder of Qi Statistics Ltd (1989), offering statistical consulting and training services to research and industry. The company supports new product development by training engineers and scientists in statistical methods for Design of Experiments, Quality Control and Statistical Process Control, and support business management by training and applying statistical techniques to corporate data. Qi Statistics Ltd are one of the world’s leading providers of statistical support for sensory and consumer applications.

If you are interested in presenting your work relating to Sensory and Consumer research at this symposium, please provide an abstract to sensory@otago.ac.nz. We will do our best to accommodate anyone who wishes to speak; however, please be aware that we have limited slots for speakers. We also welcome poster presentation and student presentation.
