Purpose
The purpose of National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement (NMSSA) is to monitor strengths, weaknesses and trends in student achievement at the national level. It gathers information from representative samples of students in year 4 and year 8 in New Zealand English medium schools, over a four-year cycle that covers all areas of the curriculum, including the key competencies and the foundation areas of literacy and mathematics.
Key features:
• Uses a light sampling approach - NMSSA uses a light sampling approach to gain a national picture of how year 4 and year 8 students in New Zealand schools are achieving and progressing. By using a carefully selected sample of approximately 2000 students from 100 schools across New Zealand at each year level we can obtain a very accurate national picture of students’ achievement.
• Data collected are anonymous and confidential – no individuals or schools are identified in reports of findings.
• Only national level findings are reported for year 4 and year 8 students. A special focus is made on the achievement of Maori students, Pasifika students and students with special education needs.
• Participating schools receive feedback about their students’ achievement and self-efficacy/engagement.
• A variety of approaches to assessment is used – paper and pencil, one-to-one interviews, individual and performance activities.
• Data from a variety of sources are ‘blended’ – to provide a rich and deep picture of students’ achievement and the factors that influence it.
In 2012 we assessed the writing and science achievement of national samples of year 4 and 8
students. This seminar discusses the implementation of NMSSA in 2012, what we learned
from it and how the findings will be reported.

English Department Friday Seminar featuring Dr Greg Waite

It has been commonly assumed that the Preface to the Old English translation of Bede's Historia ecclesiastica was written by the translator himself, and that it provides us with insights into his intentions, method of translating, and his understanding of the idea of a historia. Dr Waite argues that the preface is by another writer altogether, writing at another time and place. Accordingly scholars must rethink a range of issues including the translator's conception of history, the manner in which the text of the Old English Bede was disseminated, and even the Anglo-Saxon naming of the City of London.
