Moving Planet Day
350 Dunedin and the OERC held a huge event at Dunedin North
Intermediate on the 24th of September. The classic South Island front
was no match for the 350 day of
action, where hundreds of people gathered to learn and engage each
other about starting a life free of fossil fuels. Community
organizations from far and wide gathered to share their knowledge as
some of the best bands in Dunedin kept the whole day moving on. This
event was part of the international 350 day of action which also led a
national petition to government for the immediate halt on all new coal
fire plants and oil exploration.

Winter Lights 2011. Thought leadership forum
What part will/should fossil fuels play in New
Zealand’s transition to a renewable energy future?
This was a fantastic event even with the challenges
posed by the Chilean ash cloud. The event showcased many top
presentations, the slides of which can be accessed here.
Winter Lights 2011 will consider New Zealand’s longer-term
energy future with an emphasis on the role of fossil fuels in
transitioning the country to a more sustainable, low carbon economy.
This is the first in a series of Thought Leadership Forums being
planned and run by the National Energy Research Institute (NERI).
Seed Grant Funding
The seed grant applications have now closed. Because of
the high quality of the applications, two have been awarded this year,
each to the value of $2500
Public lecture by Dr James Hansen
Thanks for all who made it to the Public lecture on
Wednesday and showing your support! It was a record turnout with over a
thousand people packing over five lecture theatres across campus!
There were some technical difficulties with the
equipment in the main lecture theatre which caused a delay. We
sincerely apologise for this, this is the first time there had ever
been a problem with the equipment and the technicians still don't know
how it actually broke! This also caused the streaming on the website to
happen from a different theatre, we are really sorry if you couldn't
watch it at home streaming because of this. Please see the link below
for the full podcast of James' lecture.
