August 2017's digital calendar offers a glimpse of a part of the world most are unlikely to visit.
The image for August 2017’s digital calendar was taken by Marine Science Assistant Research Fellow Michelle Liddy while diving on an active volcano during a research trip to Papua New Guinea.
Our digital calendar, released each month, features the 12 winning and notable entries from the previous year’s Bulletin Board photo competition.
Marine Science Research Fellow Michelle Liddy took her underwater photo during a research trip to Papua New Guinea, when diving on an active volcano.
Ms Liddy says carbon dioxide bubbles up from the sea floor, creating a natural whole-ecosystem laboratory.
“If you look closely you can see CO2 bubbles in the photo. There was an algal bloom and a small chop on the surface this day, creating an eerily beautiful light on the reef.
“After spending a lot of time underwater for work and fun, I wanted to share the unique world with others so I bought a camera and housing three years ago; it's a great excuse to go diving.”
