Baristas from the University’s St David Café steamed into the top four places in a Latte Art Showdown held at the Plaza Café on Friday night.

The tournament-style competition aimed to find the most creative and artistic barista on campus, and 16 baristas from café’s across the University gave it a shot.

After several rounds, St David Café’s Peter Molteno won the contest with a swan design gracing the top of his winning entry. Second place went to Isabel Laing, third to Max Huang, and Peter’s brother Oliver Molteno came fourth.

Peter, who has worked at the University of Otago St David Café for about two years, says their customers enjoy good coffee, pushing him to do his best.

The secret of good latte art is fresh milk with enough cream in it, he says.

Café Manager Jo Bain is proud of the efforts of her team, and says because of the pride he takes in his work, she often asks Peter to train new recruits.

University Union Operations Manager Martin Jones says Friday evening’s showdown was a really enjoyable.

“Some of our staff were nervous about entering but we said ‘just give it a go and have some fun’.”

The competition was organised by Amelia Dalman at the Plaza Café and Jessi Sinclair from Union coffee supplier Cerebos Greggs.
