Otago Innovation Board members

Mr John F Ward - BCom(Otago) FCA FInstD - (Chair)

Mr John Ward is the Chair of Otago Innovation Limited and has been a member of the Board since October 2009. He is a director of various companies in the banking, finance, tourism and retail sectors. He is currently the Chair of SBS Bank, H&J Smith Holding Limited and the A.J. Hackett Bungy Group. John is the Chancellor of the University of Otago, chairs the University Council, the University of Otago Foundation Trust and a number of University committees.

Professor Harlene Hayne - ONZM, BA Hon DSc (Colorado College) MS PhD (Rutgers), FRSNZ

Professor Harlene Hayne has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago since August 2011. She was previously the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Enterprise) and prior to that the Head of the Psychology Department. In 2009 she was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to medical and scientific research. She was a member of the Ministry of Science and Innovation Board and has served on the Marsden Fund Council and the New Zealand National Science Panel. Professor Hayne continues her work on the Board of Fulbright, New Zealand and in 2013 she was appointed to the Board of Treasury. She has been a director of Otago Innovation Limited since 2004.

Hon. Pete Hodgson - BVSc (Massey); MPP (Dist.; Victoria)

Hon. Pete Hodgson was a Senior Cabinet Minister within the New Zealand Government from 1999 –2008. His experience in government includes: Planning and Environment, Commerce, Justice and Law Reform, Education and Science and Electoral Law Reform. He also held cabinet portfolios covering Climate Change Policy, Commerce, Economic Development, Education [tertiary], Energy, Fishing, Forestry, Land Information, Health, Science and Innovation and Transport. Post his Parliamentary experience, Pete has held positions as Otago Innovation Ltd (OIL) Director on the Board, Chair of the OIL Advisory Committee, NZ independent chair (Australia and New Zealand) of the Council for the Care of Animals in Research and Teaching (ANZCCART) as well as various other trusts and associateships.

Mr Stephen J Higgs - BCom(Otago) FCAMr

Stephen Higgs has been a director of Otago Innovation Limited since February 2013 and is also a director of its subsidiary Immune Solutions. He is Managing Partner at Polson Higgs, a firm of business advisers and chartered accountants based in Dunedin. He is a board member for a range of companies and other organisations. He is also a Trustee of the University of Otago Foundation Trust.

Dr Anna Campbell, BSc (Hons), PhD

Dr Anna Campbell has been the Managing Director of AbacusBio, an agri-technology company, since 2015. Prior to that she was a Partner at AbacusBio and a Senior Scientist in the animal genomics group at AgResearch. Dr Campbell has significant international experience, having worked in Asia, Australia and New Zealand with companies and research organisations to implement technology programmes.
Dr Campbell is an executive member of Ag@Otago, a Director of the Grow Dunedin Partnership, an agri-technology advisor to Powerhouse Ventures and a Trustee of Otago Boys’ High School. She has been a director of Otago Innovation Limited since 2017.
