Bringing diagnostic science to New Zealand's primary sector - from lab bench to farm gate.

The Disease Research Laboratory (DRL) is a diagnostic facility for the national deer herd tuberculosis testing programme. We also provide testing services for Johne’s disease in deer, cattle and sheep as well as other affected species including goats and alpaca.

Based at the University of Otago, DRL offers a unique approach to diagnostic testing, marrying innovative and current laboratory research with routine diagnostic service provision to deliver tailored, practical and comprehensive testing solutions to veterinarians and farmers. The services we provide are the practical culmination of 35 years of world-leading research into mycobacterial infection in ruminants.

In providing Paralisa™ETB and fPCR testing, coupled with ongoing in-house research activities, we are continually accumulating knowledge of all aspects of the immune response to mycobacterial infection and working towards improved diagnosis, vaccination and selection for heritable disease resistance phenotypes.
