Graham Provis accepts the inaugural 2016 Rural Preceptor of the Year award at the School of Pharmacy's Green Cross Health Award Ceremony. Here is what he has to say.

How long have you been a preceptor for the School of Pharmacy, University of Otago? Moreover, what made you want to become a preceptor?
I believe the first time I was a preceptor was in 1995 (22 years). The reason I wanted to become a preceptor was to help our students develop practical pharmacy skills, and also to encourage the student to use the knowledge they have gained at university to effect.
What are your main goals when receiving a new student? What do you hope they will achieve?
My main goal with each student is help them as much as possible on the road to becoming fully qualified. Also to encourage them to keep up to date with new information throughout their career.
What advice can you offer other preceptors when training students?
Spend time with your student and exchange the knowledge you have. Encourage your student to work steadily toward their goal.
What are some of the highlights from training our students?
I really enjoy it when the students interact with our customers; patients and staff. Also seeing how the students adjust to a rural setting.
Is there anything the School can do to support your role better?
Keep the rural placements, they are great for the student development.
