Depression and Treatment Resistance

About the Event

Professor Carlo Marra (Dean) and Professional Practice Fellow Emma Smith are traveling around New Zealand over the next two months to provide a brief overview of the School of Pharmacy, University of Otago and to deliver a continuing education workshop on treatment resistant depression.

Emma Smith, Professional Practice Fellow at the School of Pharmacy, University of Otago.

Emma Smith arrived in New Zealand in 2015 from the United Kingdom where she worked as an advanced clinical pharmacists, specialising in mental health for eight years.

'Based in a tertiary hospital working for Leeds and York Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust, she worked with a team of 14 pharmacists dedicated to looking after people with a wide variety of mental health conditions from eating disorders to schizophrenia, dementia to psychiatric intensive care.

Now, she is passing on her knowledge to the wider sector, initially in respect to treatment-resistant depression.' PharmacyToday, November 2017.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the symptoms of depression and the main criteria for diagnosis
  • Identify key pharmacological aspects of treatment
  • Describe the long term prognosis and outcome of depression

Assessment:

Group 1: ONE point – for attending the workshop but not doing the assessment (allocate Group 1 points based on one point per hour), or
Group 2: THREE points – for completion and submission of assessment questions (80% pass mark required).

This learning activity has been accredited by PSNZ ENHANCE for 1.5 hours of group 2 learning and pharmacists may allocate 3 group 2 points on successful completion of this training, evidenced by receipt of the University of Otago, School of Pharmacy Certificate of Completion.
