Conference funding support

Every PhD student is allocated up to a maximum of NZ$4,500 towards conference travel and attendance. NZ$2,000 is offered from the Division of Health Sciences, and the School of Pharmacy contributes up to NZ$2,500.

The School amount is dependent on EFTS apportionments. For example, if a student is 100% EFTS to Pharmacy, the student will receive the total amount from the School. If the student is 60% EFTS to Pharmacy, then the apportionment of School allocation will reflect that, and the student would need to consult with their secondary department for further funding to reach the $2,500. Any student who produces 80% EFTs or higher will receive 100% funding.

You may split the funding between more than one conference, if you wish to attend more than one conference during your studies, or use the total amount to attend one international conference.

If you are wanting to split the funding, please apply for School funding first. You are not able to part-apply for Divisional funding. The Division of Health Sciences only gives out the full amount of NZ$2,000 towards one conference.

Conditions of application

  • You must be in your second, or third year of study, or in your fourth year, up to the end of your publishing bursary expiry
  • You must present your research at the conference and a report is required upon returning from the conference

Application documents

Each student is required to complete a report on the conference attended and supply a copy of the abstract from the conference proceedings, within two weeks of returning from the conference.

Submission of application

All applications should be submitted to our Research Administrator, Denise Botting. Any questions you have concerning the application process for conference funding, please contact Denise.

Other opportunities for funding

Insurance during conferences

You can purchase travel insurance through the University for NZ$4.20 per day. When completing the online application form, please choose personal insurance and you need a credit card and you will be emailed your account. Please DO NOT use this system and choose business as the School will be charged and this is not acceptable as you have already received your funding.

As you receive your conference money directly to your bank account, you are responsible for payment of ALL your conference expenses including the travel insurance.

International students

Your standard insurance only covers your travel from home destination to Dunedin (return). If you are travelling elsewhere—for example, to a conference—you have to purchase separate travel insurance through the University.

Domestic students

You should also use the online service for purchasing travel insurance.

Visa requirements

International students may require a letter from the School indicating your intentions for travel. Please see the Research Administrator for this letter.

Library resources

The Medical Library is situated in the Sayers Building, 290 Great King Street. There are library liaisons designated to each discipline area. Please make use of this contact for any library query or problem—they are there to help you.
