Thesis Topic

My thesis is an exploration of how the notion of respect for autonomy is used in health care and bioethics. The notion of respect for autonomy has fallen from favour amongst bioethicists in recent years, wrongly in my view. Through analysing the cases of non-medically indicated caesareans, cosmetic surgery, and live organ donation I construct an argument for how the notion of autonomy is best understood in medicine and how respect for autonomy can best be achieved.

When I am not working on my research I can be found in the kitchen, coercing my children into doing homework, or on Twitter.

Andrew Donnelly

Research Interests Philosophy of law, bioethics, metaethics and moral psychology
Thesis Topic I am defending moral motivation externalism - the notion that moral judgements do not always motivate the agent to act in accordance with those judgements. I argue against those that maintain moral judgements motivate as a matter of 'conceptual' necessity and those who claim that, as a purely synthetic matter, moral judgements happen to always motivate.
