Musgrave Scholarship in Philosophy

Fundraising Appeal Success

The Philosophy Department at the University of Otago is delighted to announce that the Alan Musgrave Scholarship Appeal has now raised sufficient funds to enable the establishment of a scholarship. This excellent result is thanks to two substantial donations from foundations, and many generous individual donations from friends and alumni. The Fund now stands at more than $NZ600,000.

We will advertise the scholarship later this year, with a view to our first Musgrave Scholar commencing study next year. The Alan Musgrave Masters Scholarship in Philosophy will provide support for high calibre international students to study towards a Masters degree in Philosophy at the University of Otago. The scholarship will consist of a full rebate of tuition fees plus stipend for one or two years: one year in the case of MA by thesis only and two years for BA(Hons) followed by thesis.

However, please note that we still do not have quite enough funds to secure a fully-funded scholarship in perpetuity and to provide enhanced benefits that will make it more attractive to potential candidates. Therefore, the Appeal will remain open for donations until at least the end of March 2012. You can be assured that any further donations at this time will make a real difference to the viability of the scholarship as a prestige award.

If you would like to contribute to the Musgrave Scholarship Appeal then you can either download a donation form here or donate online.

BACKGROUND TO THE APPEAL

Professor Alan Musgrave, who has occupied the Chair in Philosophy at the University of Otago for forty years, is planning to retire at the end of 2010. He served as Head of Department for most of that time, arriving in Dunedin in early 1970 with the ink just about dry on his PhD from the London School of Economics.

Alan quickly established himself as a lively and popular teacher. His lectures were remarkable for their clarity and erudition, laced with jokes and gossip about famous philosophers and scientists, and delivered in his Lancashire accent with an obvious enthusiasm for the subject matter.

This appeal to raise funds for a Masters Scholarship is an important way we are able to honour Alan - both for his teaching commitment and his research enthusiasm. He has given almost his entire professional life to the University of Otago and to developing the most significant and acclaimed philosophy research department in New Zealand.

The scholarship will play an important role in the future development of the department as it continues to establish itself as a centre for postgraduate philosophy research, attracting high calibre students from around the world. It will also serve as an enduring tribute to Professor Musgrave and his legacy.
