Yesterday Dr Mikkel Andersen and his group's exceptional research has been showcased in the New Zealand Herald and the Otago Daily Times. The title, Otago scientists control atom, describes precisely what the group has achieved. Some years ago they isolated and captured a neutral rubidium-85 atom, and then photographed it on-demand for the first time. By now they can control these atoms to unprecedented precision, taking them to their motional ground states. You push a button and the atom is where you want it, in a state that you want. The group's further plans involve investigating how molecules in particular quantum states are formed from individual atoms.
Congratulations to all members of the group!
