Advanced level of knowledge, competence and skill in treatment, rehabilitation, and management for practising physiotherapists.
This paper is eligible for a Workforce Development Scholarship for New Zealand registered physiotherapists working in Comprehensive Primary and Community Care Teams.
About this funding:
- This scholarship covers one 30-point course per student, for Semester Two, 2024 only and is intended to support physiotherapists primarily employed by Te Whatu Ora who work in Comprehensive Primary and Community Care Teams. This funding will cover up to 25 physiotherapists, therefore you should apply and secure your place promptly.
- This funding does not cover travel, accommodation, textbooks, equipment, meals, or release time. Applicants can work with their employer to access workforce development enablement funding which has been provided at a regional level to support equity of access, for example travel for the paper’s compulsory residential block, and to enable the primary and community care workforce to take up these opportunities.

On completion of this paper, the student will:
- Understand the impact of the social determinants of health in a New Zealand context for people requiring support for conditions (e.g. musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular/pulmonary etc.) seen in their area of physiotherapy clinical practice.
- Take inter-professional responsibility for managing patients with conditions transitioning from acute care through to rehabilitation and management in primary care and/or the community.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the components of a therapeutic alliance in the context of relevant health beliefs and behaviours.
- Assess, appraise, critically review, and assimilate relevant literature to inform best practice, specifically:
- Current trends in physiotherapeutic management (assessment, treatment, and ethical principles) from a multisystem management context.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the pathophysiological and applied scientific basis of physiotherapeutic intervention in a multisystem context.
- Understand the physiotherapist’s role, both as a team member and as a leader, in the promotion of health and wellness of people, families, and communities.
