Shane graduated from Hamilton Teachers’ College in 1982 and completed his MA in history in 1985 at Waikato University. After a year’s teaching he joined the New Zealand Army, and taught a range of subjects, including a Masters-level distance education paper on Strategic Studies, as part of the Defence Studies programme at Massey University. In the last two
years of his service, he completed his PhD in 1996. After resigning from the Army, he taught in Dunedin and since 1995 he has been a teaching fellow in the English department at the University of Otago. Shane has published several articles both in New Zealand and overseas
in his area of interest – military studies.
