Previously lectured at University College London, Leicester University, and University of Auckland. Research interests: Russian politics and foreign policy, international politics of the former Soviet Union and Central/Eastern Europe, nationalism and ethnic conflict, International Relations theory, New Zealand and Australian foreign policies, the European Union.

His book Russia and the Balkans: Foreign Policy from Yeltsin to Putin is published by Hurst and Co./Columbia University Press.
