Understanding the world around us and how it works - how decisions are made, who benefits and who misses out, how change occurs - these are issues at the heart of the study of politics. Being able to comprehend the way power operates in society, both domestically and internationally, gives you the intellectual foundations to develop informed opinions across a range of areas - from the economy or the environment to the justice system and international relations. Studying politics has equipped me to do just this, and, I hope, will enable me to contribute meaningfully to the world around me into the future. After studying at Oxford University in the UK, I can honestly say that the calibre of teaching I received through the Politics Department at Otago was world-class, preparing me not only for the rigours of academic life here (whether discussing the global financial crisis with an octogenarian macroeconomics professor or debating the meaning of 'sustainable development'), but for the professional challenges that lie ahead - in whatever field they may be.
