Nicholas' research interests cover Chinese foreign policy, the international relations of Asia, international relations theory, and Cold War studies. Nicholas is interested in both theoretical and policy-related research, and has held research positions at various institutions in Asia and the U.S. including: the Council on Foreign Relations, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies. He was previously also a Visiting professor at the Foreign Affairs University in Beijing. His current research focuses on wedge theory, nuclear proliferation, the responses of East Asian states to China's rise, and Asian regionalism.
His most recent publication is Collateral Damage: Sino-Soviet Rivalry and the Termination of the Sino-Vietnamese Alliance (New York: Columbia University Press, 2011).
