Philip Nel received his DPhil in Philosophy from the University of Stellenbosch in 1984. He has been Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, until 2002. Since 2003, he is Professor in the Department of Politics at the University of Otago, New Zealand, where he was Head of the Department from 2007 to 2010. He has been visiting Professor in Germany and Japan, and is a Professor Extraordinaire at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Philip was one of the founding editors of the International Studies Association journal Foreign Policy Analysis, and serves on the editorial boards of Global Society, International Studies Perspectives, and Political Studies.
