An Intermediate Chinese Reader

Qiao Zhang

A one-year reading course in Chinese language, based on twenty-five texts and associated exercises. This will serve as a textbook for intermediate-level learners. Many of the texts describe and explain Chinese cultural ways and will be of great interest to students. New Zealand and Australian subjects, such as the gold rushes, the All Blacks, and the kangaroo, are also included. Each text is presented in four ways - traditional characters, simplified characters, pin yin and English, with an accompanying word list. There is also a detailed glossary.

The book will be used by • Non-native speakers who are studying Chinese at universities, polytechnics or high schools; • Cantonese speakers studying the standard form of Chinese (pin yin/ mandarin); • Chinese native speakers studying translation between English and Chinese.

This is the second book in a series, the first of which was A Beginner's Chinese Reader by Shifen Gong and Haixin Jiang, also published by the University of Otago Press.
