Dorothy Page

Dorothy Page was born and grew up in Invercargill and educated at the University of Otago. Her strong interest in the history of the University of Otago was kindled in the 1960s, when she worked on the centennial history with Professor Morrell. It now finds an outlet in the History of the University Unit.

Lecturing in History from 1970, Dorothy Page taught medieval European and modern French history. With Barbara Brookes, she opened up the then new field of women’s history at Otago, completing a PhD in 1984 and remaining in the Otago History department throughout a thoroughly enjoyable working life. On retirement in 2000, she was an associate-professor and had been head of department for five years.

Much of Dorothy Page’s research has focused on women’s history and biography. Her publications include The National Council of Women: A Centennial History (1996) and Communities of Women: Historical Perspectives (2002, edited with Barbara Brookes), and most recently Anatomy of a Medical School: A History of Medicine at the University of Otago 1875–2000 (2008).
