Harvey Brown

Born in Auckland in 1933, Harvey Brown was educated at Mt Albert Grammar School, Auckland University College, and the University of Otago.

After graduating Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1956, he became Dental Officer at the Levin Hospital and Training School, where he developed expertise treating children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities; his research on periodontal disease in Down Syndrome culminated in the degree of Doctor of Dental Science (Otago) in 1973.

In 1970 he was appointed Lecturer at the Dental School, University of Otago. When he retired in 1993, he was Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Community Dental Health, and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry.

He was appointed Assistant Editor of the New Zealand Dental Journal in 1971, and was Editor from 1975 through 2002. The New Zealand Dental Association elected him a Fellow in 1991 and an Honorary Life Member in 1994.

An accomplished singer, he has appeared as soloist with a number of choirs, and was Assistant Conductor of the Southern Consort of Voices and the City of Dunedin Choir; he currently sings with the Kapiti Chamber Choir.

He and Janet have five children and four grandchildren.
