Peter Stuart

Peter Stuart was born in Lower Hutt, educated at Hutt Valley High School, and studied for an Arts Degree at Victoria University of Wellington and Canterbury University, majoring in history. After serving in what was then the N.Z. Department of External Affairs, he was accepted for ordination to the Anglican priesthood and studied theology in England at the College of the Resurrection at Mirfield and at Trinity College Oxford.

Ordained in 1963, he served a curacy in Christchurch, and subsequently held a series of church posts in Wellington, including Anglican Chaplain at Victoria University (where he was also a history tutor), and Canon Theologian and Director of the Wellington Institute of Theology in the Diocese of Wellington.

He is now retired, but continues to be active in the field of theological education, in both Anglican and ecumenical settings. He is married to Julia Stuart, a well-established journalist in church and community affairs.

With Raymond Pelly, he is the editor of A Religious Atheist? Critical Essays on the Work of Lloyd Geering (Otago University Press, 2006).
