Nathan Love. Nathan Love
Graduate
Teaching and History

Armed with a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Otago, Nathan Love took off to explore the world in 2000. As it turned out, the world sent him back again.

It was while Nathan was living in Taiwan teaching English to kindergarten kids he "got the teaching bug".

Having discovered his calling, he decided to come home to gain the qualifications he needed. And to fully indulge his love of sport and coaching, he chose to train as a secondary school teacher.

Nathan spent 2007 at the University of Otago completing the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary Education), and at the end of the year was a qualified secondary school teacher in English, History and Social Studies.

Nathan enjoyed "an intense and rewarding year" earning his Diploma. Classes of people of all ages and backgrounds were full of lively debate, encouraged by staff who "made sure that everyone knew everyone else" and "teach you how to teach what you know".

He remembers lots of time spent in the classroom getting hands-on teaching experience, with close supervision making sure he felt safe and supported: "My supervisor was "available day and night to vent to when needed!"

And now, Nathan's teaching career plans have come to fruition.

This year Nathan steps back into the classroom, but will now be at the front of the class: he's beginning work just down the road from the University of Otago, at Logan Park High School as an English teacher.
