Sione Teu is committed to rugby, while studying hard for his degree.

While rugby is Sione’s sporting focus, he tries to play most of the social sports offered by Otago – and when he’s back home in Auckland, he plays tennis and volleyball.
He’s represented Otago in several age-grade teams, North Otago in the Heartland Championship Rugby Competition, and the New Zealand Universities team. He also plans to be involved in upcoming community events such as Relay for Life.

While his academic focus is to complete his degree in Accounting and Marketing, Sione hopes to play professional rugby in the near future.

Family has been an important influence for him: “I could name a few people who have influenced me so far, but one prominent figure that has always been in my life would have to be my sister Ala – who’s also studying in Dunedin. In my triumphs, she keeps me grounded, and when I am battling she helps out. I’ve been in an unspoken competition with her since our primary school days. And so far,” he quips, “she’s winning!”

The first-year experience at Otago is something Sione has enjoyed, and the experience of flatting. “It teaches you about independence and responsibility.” But, says Sione, “what I enjoy most about Otago is the life-long relationships you form with the different people you meet over your years of study.”

Sione describes “the student vibe and culture” of Dunedin as unique. “Most universities are set amongst the hustle and bustle of big cities,” he notes, “which almost always drowns out the student experience. But here in North Dunedin, we’re lucky that it’s nothing but students, so there’s always a good buzz.”
Managing his sporting and academic commitments comes down to planning his day the night before. “In terms of stress relief,” he says, “I always like to indulge in a bit of PS3.”

Sione greatly enjoys the University Recreation Centre facilities, which he says are “top notch”.

And his philosophy on achieving his goals? “I believe that if you’re committed to your cause, it makes the sacrifices seem that much easier.”

Sione demonstrates this commitment, and his achievements so far are outstanding.
