Current role

"I am working as a senior clinical pharmacist at Latrobe Regional Hospital, Victoria, Australia. I have been involved in setting up a clinical service to our mental health ward. Historicaly the pharmacy department only provided a service on a referal basis, we identified this area was in desperate need of a full time pharmacy service. This has been a great learning experience for myself and now I have a much broader understanding of the medications prescribed in Mental Health. I am also a preceptor for one of the three interns we have employed this year. Once a week we have an education session for all the preceptors and interns to attend. During these teaching sessions the preceptors will discuss specific clinical topics which are relevant to the intern training schedule. I also help out in the dispensary and medical, surgical, geriatric and orthopaedic wards to ensure current KPI (key performance indicators) are met."

Your Otago experience

"Initially I had my doubts about studying in the South Island and being away from my family in New Plymouth. Looking back now and reminicing about my Otago experience, it was one of the highlights of my life. I got to meet and study alongside lots of great students and friends. Studying in Dunedin also helped me become more independent. I met a lot of people, made amazing friends, had great experiences and created memories that I will reminice about for a long time to come."

Any other comments

"I would highly recommend making the same decision I made a few years ago, I have never looked back and can only speak highly of my experiences in Otago. I have met at least one Otago graduate at every hospital I have worked at, even here in Australia. Straight away you have something in common and can share experiences."
