Sea Kayak Trip - Doubtful Sound
"Like no other in New Zealand"

INTRODUCTION

kayakers This weekend trip is about allowing yourself some quality time to experience a genuine kayaking and camping adventure in a remote New Zealand environment. On this guided trip you'll have the opportunity to kayak in the midst of a massive glacial landscape and experience untouched wilderness. This trip caters for people of all paddling abilities. All participants must have a good level of confidence in the water.

Safety and comfort considerations mean this trip has a weight limit of 115kg, please don't be offended if this impacts on your ability to participate on this trip.

Fiordland Wilderness Experiences

ITINERARY

Friday

Meet at the Unipol Recreation Centre at 4.00pm and drive to Manapouri where you'll stay at the Lakeview Motel & Motor Park for the night. Dinner will be takeaways en route or bring your own food from home.

Saturday

Up, have breakfast and be ready by 6.30am where you meet your guide and then cross Lake Manapouri by motorboat. Then a 24km four wheel drive trip over Wilmont Pass, down to Deep Cove. By approximately 9.30am the Doubtful Sound wilderness experience begins when you help pack the kayaks and set off to the entrance of Hall Arm. Lunch is at a small beach of your choice. Saturday night set up the tents in a small forest camp in the midst of the ancient podocarp forest.

Sunday

Spend the second day paddling out of Hall Arm heading down the main reach stopping for lunch and if possible circling Elizabeth Island exploring Oiphert Cove. Then back to Deep Cove often with wind and waves behind you. Heading back to Manapouri by early evening. Sort out the gear and stop for refreshments to reminisce on your weekend before driving back to Dunedin, either having some food before leaving or stopping off for dinner en route and arriving around approximately 10.00pm.

WHAT IS PROVIDED?

Transport, accommodation on Friday night (shared, mixed, bunkroom style), breakfast & lunch Saturday and Sunday, dinner Saturday night, kayaks and equipment, kayak clothing (e.g. wetsuits, jackets, fleece tops, polypropylene clothing, hats) kayaking guide, cookers and cooking equipment, tents and sleeping mats. Waterproof bags for your personal gear are provided, plus a special waterproof bag for your camera.

As our Recreation Services facilitator will not be accompanying the group while kayaking, it is expected that the group will work together to prepare meals, do dishes and give general assistance over the weekend. Recreation Services will provide menus and recipes for the group.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING

•  You will be carrying any gear with you in your kayak so please pack conservatively.

Food - Money for meals on Friday and Sunday nights & refreshments, snacks for Saturday and Sunday (e.g. dried fruit, scroggin, energy bars, chocolate etc).

Clothing and kayak gear - All kayak gear and kayak clothing is provided. You will need to bring neoprene booties or book them, at no charge, from Recreation Services before you leave. A bond of $40 and a completed hire agreement are required when you book your booties. Bring warm clothing to change into for camping on Saturday night (a warm long sleeved top and leggings are recommended). Please be prepared for all possible weather conditions for this trip e.g.: sun, snow, wind, rain and hail.

General - water-resistant sunblock, insect repellent, sunglasses, towel, sleeping bag, torch, plate, mug, cutlery, personal medication and first aid supplies, toiletries (minimum required), camera or waterproof disposable camera, water bottle, ties or rubber bands to seal your waterproof bags. Please feel free to bring CDs for the van.

PRE-TRIP MEETING

There will be a pre-trip meeting for ALL participants on Wednesday 24 March, 5.00pm, at the Unipol Recreation Centre. We'll go over the itinerary, discuss the gear requirements, food requirements and weekend menus, and give you the opportunity to meet other participants.
