Sailing - Otago Harbour
INTRODUCTION
Learn the basics of sailing on the beautiful Otago Harbour. This introductory course will give you a sound foundation on which to build further experience.
The course will cover:
- An introduction to the boat
- Charts and knots
- Boat handling on and off the water
- Meteorology
- Getting out there and having a go!
The course starts with an outdoor theory session on Thursday evening at the Vauxhall Yacht Club (dress warmly) followed by practical sessions out on the water on Saturday and Sunday. Due to the nature of sailing, please expect to feel cold and wet at times during the course. We strongly recommend that you wear thermal underwear underneath your wetsuit to keep yourself warm.
Another possibility for all beginner sailers is that you may capsize your boat. For this reason, all participants must have a good level of confidence in the water.

PRE-REQUISITE
To assist with your understanding of sailing in advance of the course starting, it is a requirement of this course that you watch a sailing video prior to the first session. This video ("At One With the Wind") is about 1 hour long and is available for viewing at Unipol Recreation Centre. Please be aware that other course participants will be wanting to view the video as well - for this reason we recommend you arrange to watch it at least 3-4 days before the course starts.
WHAT IS PROVIDED & WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
All instruction, wetsuit and hard-soled booties are provided. Please have a fitting for your wetsuit and booties when you enrol.
Transport for the theory session on Thursday night is provided for those who require it - please let us know when you enrol if you require transport. Transport will leave Unipol Recreation Centre at 5.30pm sharp. Transport for Saturday and Sunday will be discussed with the group at the Thursday session - we aim for the group to arrange to car-pool to the Yacht Club for the weekend sessions.
Please bring to the weekend sessions - wetsuit, booties, swimsuit, towel, windproof jacket, thermal underwear, a change of warm dry clothes, your lunch & hot and cold drinks.
