Surfing

INTRODUCTION

surfing

This beginners' course provides an introduction to the sport of surfing, through some theory and developing practical skills.

It will cover the history of surfing, different boards and wetsuits, terminology, weather & surf conditions, and safety standards. Practical skills include tying boards onto racks, reading the surf conditions, gearing up, parts of the board, trimming and body position, group and personal safety, wiping out, paddling technique, catching waves and standing up.

If there is any doubt about the weather conditions on either day, you will be contacted by the tutor by 8.30am, however assume that unless you hear from us it will go ahead as planned. Please ensure we have contact details where we can reach you.

If in the event of bad weather a session is postponed, we aim to arrange a catch-up session to suit the group.

WHAT IS PROVIDED AND WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

All instruction, transport, beginner softboards, wetsuits and booties are provided. Please have a fitting for your wetsuit, and booties at the Unipol Recreation Centre when you enrol. We will load your wetsuit and booties in the van on the Friday before the course starts so you are ready to head off promptly at 9.00am on Saturday. You will need to return your wetsuit and booties rinsed out (so you can get your bond back) either after the Sunday session or Monday morning.

You will get cold at various times during the course! Bring extra warm clothing, a polypropylene/thermal top (essential), a woollen jersey, and something to eat and drink (hot and cold drinks).

Meet at Unipol Recreation Centre, Building One, University Plaza, Anzac Avenue at 8.45am and travel in our van to local beaches.
