Framing Studio
Introduction
The Framing Studio is available to those who have done our picture framing course who wish to work on further framing projects. Situated on the 1st Floor of the University Oval Complex, it is available during the building opening hours or by arrangement.
Equipment and Resources
A variety of picture framing tools and equipment is available to use – square, rulers, pencils, eraser, craft knives, mat board cutters, guide rails, guillotine, frame joining machine, compressor & staple gun, eye protection, hammer, point gun and push tool. Supplies available to use in the studio include tape, glue, staples, nails, glass cleaner, diamond shaped points, screw-eyes and string.
Our guillotine cuts through most sizes of frame and the frame joining machine (V-nailer) underpins the frame to hold it together.
Price per session (4 hours max)
- Student = $5.00
- Staff & Public = $15.00
(Payment can be made by cash or cheque - sorry no eftpos available)
All supplies other than those mentioned above need to be provided by yourself. This includes backing boards, mat boards, picture mouldings and glass.
Please contact the Programme Co-ordinator on 479 5484 or the Oval Complex on 479 0951, to make a booking. The Studio is available when other scheduled activities are not being held in the room (generally more available in the daytimes and weekends).
Developing Your Framing Skills
Been a while since you learned how to frame? Feel like you know what to do but lack the confidence to get started?
We offer a ”Refreshers Framing” class where you bring your own materials and projects and our tutor is available to guide you through the process and refresh you on how to use the machines.These classes are held regularly - for more information, pick up a brochure from the Unipol Recreation Centre.
Framing Supplies
Art Zone (59 Hanover St, ph 477 0211)
Art Zone offers a 10% discount to Studio users on general framing supplies including mat, backing and specialty boards (in full sheets only); mat cutters; glass; picture mouldings.
Moulding - Cut only $7.00; Join only $3.00 ; Cut and join $10.00;
You’ll need an Art Zone business card to get the discount – please contact us for additional cards.
Glass
A number of companies around Dunedin will be able to supply you with glass. Check the Yellow Pages for details on Wrens, Glass Solutions, Aburns, Otago Glass, Art Zone and others.
Picture Moulding (framing) (29 Ward St, ph 477 0492)
Picture moulding can be purchased from VisualEdge Picture Moulding on Ward St (just over the railway lines across Anzac Ave). We hold a box of samples with price list and catalogue so you can choose in advance which ones you want. They also stock “seconds” if you are looking for budget moulding to practice on before attempting that big project.
You’ll need your student ID card or a VisualEdge Picture Moulding business card to qualify for the special price negotiated for our Studio users. – please contact us for additional cards.
Backing Board & Mat Boards
Backing and mat board is available from Southern Paper Products, 46 Main Rd, Fairfield, Dunedin ph 488 1002. Mat boards can be brought directly from most framing specialists in Dunedin.
