Senior Lecturer, Islamic Studies
Taneli is Senior Lecturer in Islamic Studies. His primary research interests are in the history of Islamic theology, philosophy, and mysticism, all areas in which he has published widely. Taneli also studies late ancient thought, medieval Latin Scholasticism, and contemporary philosophy of religion. Taneli has previously taught at the Universities of Victoria and Jyväskylä: he has been Visiting Research Fellow at the universities of Toronto, New York, and Exeter as well as a Fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study. In July 2012 Taneli will take over as Editor of Philosophy in Review.
Taneli teaches papers on various aspects of Islamic thought and on comparative topics in the three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). In the second semester of 2012, Taneli will be on academic leave, finishing a major project funded by the European Research Council entitled 'Subjectivity and Selfhood in the Arabic and Latin Traditions'.
