Schools engagement

Maori pre-graduationA number of staff and postgraduate students work regularly with schools in the Dunedin area and further afield. Sometimes this is regular and organised systematically, and sometimes it happens more serendipitously. Both work!

Many schools come and complete units of study in university labs that can't be done in school - Biochemistry, Microbiology, Marine Science, Chemistry, Food Science and others work with schools in this way.

So if you have a unit of work that you think would benefit from university input, please give us a call and we will do our best to find a good match.

View the Science Outreach section of our website.

Public events

There are a number of public lectures, science exhibitions and open days throughout the year. Check the Division's News and Events section, or the wider university's calendar of events for more details.

Community-based research

The University is part of a partnership with the Otago Museum, the Otago Polytechnic and Ngai Tahu established to link community groups with researchers. This is a win-win: the community gets access to robust research expertise and sometimes specialised equipment, and the researchers get real world research questions to work on, and on-the-ground support for the research.
