Active Living Laboratory offers a vibrant research environment with multidisciplinary collaborations and multi-sector approach to research. Research areas include Physical Activity and Health, Built Environment, Public Health and Cardiac Rehabilitation. Our mission is to work with the wider community, offer an inspirational research experience to postgraduate students, advance knowledge and inspire communities and individuals to lead healthy lifestyles.

New Zealand Centre for Sport Policy and Politics

Members of the Centre are engaged in empirically-based research in the service of sport policy, monitoring and evaluation studies, and education and advocacy for the two most important ambitions of New Zealand sport: ‘sport for all’ (widespread grassroots participation) and high performance in elite-level sports.

Dance Studies

Dance studies is a branch of the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences and affiliated with Professional Studies major. We also have strong ties to the Bachelor of Performing Arts degree. Dance studies is as interdisciplinary program and a research collective, who study dance in relationship to: environment, anthropology, sociology, health, neuroscience, Maori/ Indigenous Studies, community, music, and politics, theatre, technology and film. Our cohort of scholars examine the unique and ongoing New Zealand and Pacific Island dance histories in addition to global dance settings such as Greece, India, United States to West Africa.

Human Movement Analysis Laboratory

The Human Movement Analysis Lab studies human movement from both mechanistic and behavioural perspectives. We use leading edge technology to accurately examine human movement to understanding how and why humans move to enhance movement patterns for people with and without movement disorders.

Te Koronga: Māori Research Excellence

Te Koronga is a Māori research excellence group that is part of the Te Koronga: Indigenous Science Research Theme. Dr Anne-Marie Jackson and Dr Hauiti Hakopa are co-directors of both groups. Their focus is to uplift the hopes and aspirations of Māori communities through research excellence. The research focuses on Māori physical education and health, which is the application of Te Ao Māori (Māori worldview), Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) and Kaupapa Māori theory and methodology. They have a strong group of research students who work with numerous Māori community groups throughout New Zealand. Anne-Marie and Hauiti are both involved in different Centres of Research Excellence, National Science Challenges and various research projects.
