Otago's Spanish programme has strong links with Latin America

The winner of the Spanish Embassy award for 2011 is Ellis Schriefer. She is planning to study in Universidad Complutense of Madrid in 2012.

Following groundwork undertaken by staff of the Division of Humanities over the last years, Otago University now has seven new partnerships in Latin America to add to the agreement signed in 1999 with the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Memoranda of Understanding with key universities in the region were signed by Otago's Vice Chancellor in the course of a visit he made to Latin America in November 2001 as part of the Prime Minister's delegation.

Agreements were signed in the presence of the Prime Minister at a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Relations in Mexico City with the Universidad de Colima, and Universidad Veracruzana, which are universities of national importance in Mexico. Otago hopes that these agreements will open the way to shared research and teaching in anthropology and indigenous studies, Asia Pacific studies and Latin American studies. Visits between staff of the partner universities have already begun to explore these possibilities and student exchanges with all of the campuses. We also have an exchange agreement with Instituto Technológico Autónomo de Mexico (ITAM)

An agreement was also been signed with the Catholic University of Argentina, which includes both a Memorandum of Understanding and a Student Exchange Agreement.
Msgr Alfredo Horacio Zecco, Vice Chancelor of Universidad Católica Argentina, underlined the importance of international links during his speech of welcome to the Prime Minister and the Vice Chancellor of Otago University: "Our society expects answers from those who have the privilege and the joy of dedicating their lives to study and research. That's why I'm also promoting a greater involvement of our university with the community, both local and global, in which we live. I am pleased then to start today a new relationship with a foremost educational institution of New Zealand with a wide international reputation: the University of Otago".

Otago's Spanish programme also has strong links with Spain:

In 2006 new partnerships were established with 2 Spanish universities, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, and Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 2008 a new agreement was reached with another Spanish tertiary institution, Universidad de Granada. These are the 3 universities where Otago students can do their In Country study as part of their Honours degree in Spanish.
