Research Areas:
Angela Gracia has specialized within Linguistics in Syntax, Semantics and Theory of Grammar, and went on to Spanish Variations and Historiography of Linguistics. Her second research field is within Teaching Methodology and Second Language Acquisition.

Academic Experience:
Studied at the Freie Universität of Berlin (Germany) Spanish, German and French and specialized in all three within Linguistics and completed a Master´s within Linguistics in 1986. In 1987 she got an appointment as Profesora Associate (Lecturer) at the University of Seville (Spain) within the German Department where she completed her Ph D. in 1993 in Linguistics.
In 1995 she moved to Dunedin where she taught within the Linguistics Department at Otego University. Then went on to teach within the Spanish Department at the Auckland University and then as Senior Lecturer at UNITEC in Auckland. Since 2002 she teaches at University of Otego as Spanish Lecturer.

Mr Araya taught English as a Second Language in Asuncion, Paraguay for one year,
and in different high schools for 18 years in Chile. Since March 2001,
he has worked at Otago for the Spanish Programme, teaching first, second, and third-year language papers. He was appointed Teaching Fellow in 2002. He has coordinated language papers at 100, 200, and 300 levels. He has also worked as a translator for this University.

The main focus of my research deals with public everyday space in Spanish cities, particularly in the contemporary period. Looking at urban phenomena, such as: urban renewal, gentrification, mass tourism, ruins, architecture, civic regulations, urban furniture, public art…, I am interested in how we (as cultural agents, urban dwellers, tourists, immigrants, government officials, artists, activists…) use our urban milieu to construct our ideas and practices regarding social identity, history, and political potential.
