She is planning to study in Universidad Complutense of Madrid in 2012.Studying Spanish at OtagoSpanish was introduced at Otago in 2001 and for 2003 a Major in Spanish was approved with papers at 100, 200 and 300 level covering both language and culture papers. You will have a choice between Studies in Spanish culture and Studies in Latin American Culture. In each level Spanish is taught using a communicative approach that ensures spoken competence practised in simulated situations. Throughout the course, you will have consistent exposure to modern Spanish in the four skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking using authentic spoken and written texts, particularly Spanish and Latin American film and media. While studying Spanish you will have opportunities to interact with other students and enjoy a variety of communicative activities including role-plays, games, articles, songs, videos and the Internet. The course books that you will use all emphasize communicative skills. In addition to the authentic Spanish with which the native speakers from Spain and Latin America provide students, there are also New Zealanders working in the Spanish programme who have gone through the same language learning process as their students. Our curriculum emphasizes the linguistic and cultural aspects of language learning, covering both Spain and Latin America. This is reinforced on an extracurricular level with film showings, discussion groups and a student Spanish club. The programme of brief, regular internal assessments represents 60%-70% of your final grade and emphasizes the cumulative nature of mastery in successive foreign language functions. BA (Honours) in SpanishStudents achieving at least a B+ average in Spanish and that have completed the requisite coursework may be invited to enroll in the BA (Honours) in Spanish. Invitations to enroll in Honours are typically extended at the end of each academic year. Students can designate this status beginning in their second year of study at the University of Otago. Comments from Honours Students Abroad“I think Granada is a great city to live in, it seems cosy like Dunedin but with about 1000 more bars (tapas bars), so the night life and social atmosphere is great. The university is good. It’s also not too expensive to live here, which is always a bonus. And it’s really easy to find a flat when you get here. There is a lot for students which is good and there is quite a lot of opportunities to live with other Spanish students, which is good for developing the language.” –Erica Mangin, BA(Hons) 4th year, Universidad de Granada, 2009 If you are interested in discussing the possibility of Honours, contact Dr. Ángela Gracia, (email: angela.gracia@otago.ac.nz), Programme Coordinator or any of the Lecturers in the Spanish Programme. To combine Spanish studies with other degrees.DIPLOMA IN LANGUAGE, DIPLOMA IN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE: Students specializing in areas outside the Humanities, or with heavy non-language commitments within Humanities, will therefore be able to add a programme of language study to their main specialization. Completion of the Diploma in Language or Diploma in Language and Culture will allow students to graduate with two recognized and endorsed qualifications from the University of Otago. The Diploma comprises 126 points of language papers (the language option), or 126 points of language papers and culture papers (the language and culture option). The 126 points would normally be completed concurrently alongside a degree programme over four years, with 36 points completed in each of the years concurrent with the degree and 18 points of the Diploma to be completed in the fourth year of study. Up to 36 points could be cross-credited from the degree programme towards the Diploma, thereby reducing the Diploma from four to three years of concurrent study. Students who complete an 18-point Summer School paper in January and February will be able to reduce the in-semester concurrent study component still further. Please contact Department of Languages and Cultures course advisors to plan a relevant Diploma programme.
