Immigration Requirements
It is essential for international students to hold valid visas and permits before enrolment can be completed. Dunedin-based international students who are renewing their student permits are able to apply through the International Office. Application forms and further information are available elsewhere on this website.
All other international students must make a direct application to an Immigration New Zealand branch office. Further information on the student visa process, including application forms and which office to contact, are available at http://www.immigration.govt.nz.
Medical and Travel Insurance Requirements
All international students are reminded of the obligation to comply with New Zealand Government requirements for comprehensive medical and travel insurance. Evidence of suitable medical and travel insurance must be presented as a condition of enrolment at the University. Further details on the procedures for obtaining adequate insurance cover are available elsewhere on this website.
Note that many international insurance policies do not comply with New Zealand Government regulations. Please read the advice on healthcare for international students elsewhere on this website before purchasing any insurance in your home country.
English Language Courses
The University of Otago Language Centre offers courses for international students who would like help with English. Tutors can assist individuals or small groups of students to develop specific skills using materials related to the students' subject area. Email uolcfy@otago.ac.nz or see www.otago.ac.nz/uolcfy/.
The University also offers two papers, LING 121 English for Academic Purposes and LING 122 Advanced Academic English, which are intended to help students for whom English is a second language and which can also be credited to many degree programmes.
