Overview
A university entrance qualification is essential for admission to the University of Otago for all types of programmes. You must also be at least 16 years of age by 31 December 2012 in order to enrol for study at the University for 2013.
The information below applies only to domestic students applying for study at a New Zealand university for the first time.

If you have been enrolled at another New Zealand university (whether in 2012 or previously) your method of admission will transfer from your previous institution.
New Zealand University Entrance Requirements
New Zealand University Entrance can be achieved through one of the following categories:
- NCEA Level 3
- Cambridge International Examinations (CIE)
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
- other New Zealand secondary school qualifications
- Australian Secondary School Ranking (ATAR or OP)
- overseas secondary school qualifications
- tertiary qualifications or study
- Foundation Studies
- Special Admission - for students 20 years of age or over
- Discretionary Entrance - for students under 20 years of age
Language Requirements
If you are seeking admission to the University you must be competent in the use and understanding of written and spoken English.
You fulfil language requirements if you meet the admission criteria for:
- NCEA Level 3
- University Entrance
- Completion of Year 13 overseas
- Cambridge International Examinations (CIE)
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
- Australian secondary school ranking (ATAR or OP)
If you do not meet the criteria for any of these methods of admission, and your first language is not English or Mäori, you must normally provide certified results in order to satisfy language Requirements for admission to the University of Otago.
