Tuition fees guide 2018

Introduction

This is a guide to help you calculate your fees. The figures supplied will also assist you in making fair cost comparisons between courses and institutions.

Each figure listed in the table below represents the tuition fee for a normal full-time course comprised entirely of papers from the specified subject area. For example, the fee for a normal full-time course made up entirely of papers from Computer Science, Design, Geography, Information Science, Music and Science will be $6,923.00

Many students will, however, enrol for papers from a range of subject areas, and may enrol for less or greater than 1.0 EFTS (equivalent full time student) in a given year. As a result, your actual tuition fee is calculated on the basis of fees for each paper that you include in your course. The fee for each paper is calculated according to the fee for its subject area multiplied by its EFTS 'value' (the proportion of 1.0 EFTS it represents).

The examples show how fees are calculated for a selection of typical courses.

Student services fees

The University of Otago is required by Government regulation to ensure a range of services are available to students and these are funded through the charging of the Student Services Fee.

In 2018 the Student Services Fee (GST inclusive) for Dunedin on-campus students is $798.00.

Students whose course is delivered at the other University of Otago campuses, Wellington are charged a Student Services Fee of $124.00 and Christchurch are charged a Student Services Fee of $153.00, Southland campus students are charged $134.00. Postgraduate students at these campuses are charged a Student Services Fee of $40.83.

Students enrolled for courses taught entirely at a distance are not charged the Student Services Fee.

Student Services Fee for Summer School $133.00

These fees are compulsory however there are certain exemptions that may apply. Please refer to the University of Otago website for details.

The Otago University Students' Association (OUSA) membership is voluntary in 2018 and there is no charge for membership.

Payment of fees

Once Course Enrolment is complete, the final phase of your Enrolment at Otago is paying your fees.

The University issues your invoice via the ‘My Account’ page in eVision with all the information you need to organise payment. Once your fees have been paid and you’ve completed course enrolment, you’re officially enrolled.

Tuition fee invoices are displayed in a student’s eVision portal, the University of Otago does not post printed invoices to students.

Students registering for study at the start of the academic year are required to pay all fees enrolled for by 10 February 2018. Students registering for second semester study only, must pay fees by 10 July 2018. Summer School fees are payable by 5.00pm on 12 January 2018.

A late payment fee of $100 will be charged if accounts are not paid by the due date.

If a student increases his or her programme of study during the year by adding one or more papers, the additional tuition fee for those papers is payable 20 days from when the change of course is registered.

Method of payment

Fees must be paid in New Zealand Dollars and can be paid by any one of the following means:

1. Cash, cheque or eftpos

Cash, cheque or eftpos (subject to individual bank limits) paid directly to Revenue Management Office - Cashiers in the basement of the Clocktower.

2. Personal or bank cheque

Personal or bank cheque made out to the "University of Otago" and post to:

Please don't forget to add your name and student ID to the transfer.

4. Government Student Loan

The Ministry of Social Development administers the Student Loan Scheme. For applications, please visit the StudyLink website:

Please take care to authorise the payment of your tuition fees directly to the University. As soon as your loan has been approved, Studylink will contact the University to confirm payment of fees by loan and to request details of your course of study. Once you have course approved, the University will confirm your details with Studylink to allow payment of fees to proceed. You do not need to contact the Revenue Management Office as Studylink will do this directly.

You must apply for your student loan before the due date for payment of fees to avoid the late payment fee of $100. If you have applied before the due date and you receive an account with a late payment fee charged, please return your account with written evidence from Studylink of the date of application of your student loan. Please also note that your student loan will not cover any late fees incurred.

5. Scholarship or Third Party Payments

a) If your tuition fees are to be covered by a University of Otago scholarship and you receive a fee account it means that the internal processing has not yet been completed. Please contact the Scholarships Office via scholarships@otago.ac.nz to ensure there are no problems.

b) If your tuition fees are to be paid by an external scholarship, trust fund, employer etc and you receive a fee account, please ask the third party concerned to contact the Fees Office for information on how to pay.

Changes of course

Changing papers after a student's course has been finalised, requires fresh course approval. If a student wishes to add or drop one or more papers he or she must collect a Change of Course form from the Student Information Centre.

The closing dates for adding new papers are at 5.00pm on:

  • 15 January 2018 Summer School papers
  • 2 March 2018 first semester paper and full year papers
  • 13 July 2018 second semester papers

The closing dates for dropping papers, without financial penalty (excepting the $100.00 Tuition Refund fee if all papers are dropped), are at 5.00pm on:

  • 15 January 2018 Summer School papers
  • 16 March 2018 first semester 
  • 23 March 2018 full year papers
  • 27 July 2018 second semester papers

If you change your course after enrolment, any additional fees incurred become liable for payment as soon as the change of course is registered.

Refund of fees

A student may be deleted from enrolment in papers up until 5.00pm on:

  • 15 January 2018 Summer School papers
  • 16 March 2018  for first semester papers
  • 23 March 2018  for full year papers
  • 27 July 2018  for second semester papers.

If a student deletes in full and has completed the Course Approval process, tuition fees paid will be refunded in full, less a Tuition Refund fee of $100.00.

A student may withdraw after these dates, and may receive up to a 50% refund of tuition fees in exceptional circumstances only (sundry and administration fees are non-refundable). In these cases, withdrawal must be completed by:

  • 5 February 2018  Summer School papers
  • 4 May 2018  for first semester papers
  • 14 September 2018 for second semester and full year papers

'Exceptional circumstances' are defined as circumstances, which are beyond the control of the student, and include illness supported by a medical certificate.

If you are enrolled in a programme and the University has incurred costs on your behalf for external clinical placements, then these additional costs must be met by you, and will be deducted from any refund.

If you elect to use a Government Student Loan to pay your University fees, and those fees are paid by StudyLink to the University out of your student loan, and you subsequently become eligible for a refund of all or part of your University fees, the University will make the refund directly to StudyLink (to be credited against your student loan balance). This is consistent with the provision in your student loan contract with StudyLink.

International fees

International Students studying at Otago pay international tuition fees.

The figures listed in the fees schedule below are a guide and represents the tuition fee for a normal full-time course comprised entirely of papers from the specified subject area.

Many students will, however, enrol for papers from a range of subject areas. Your actual tuition fee is calculated on the basis of fees for each paper that you include in your course.

The tuition fees do not include the student services and administration fees. Information on these fees is available in the section above.

Payment of International Tuition Fees

The University of Otago uses the Western Union Business Solutions payment portal for you to pay your tuition, accommodation and insurance fees.

Tuition fees for International PhD students

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students enrolling for the first time at a New Zealand university from 2006 are eligible to pay tuition fees at the New Zealand domestic level. International PhD students must be resident in New Zealand during their study, apart from approved temporary absences overseas for the purposes of doctoral research, to be classified as domestic students.

From 2006 dependants of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students will be treated as New Zealand domestic students for the purposes of fee payment at primary (approximately 5 - 12 years of age) and secondary (approximately 13 - 18 years of age) schools.

Refund Policy for International Students

If the University withdraws an offer of a place or is unable to provide the course, all tuition fees paid are fully refundable. If, however, an offer is withdrawn on the basis of incorrect or incomplete information supplied by the student, the University reserves the right to retain up to 10% of the course fee.

A student who has received a conditional offer of a place but fails to meet the conditions of the offer will have the course deposit and any tuition fees refunded in full.

A student who has not been required to secure his/her place with a deposit, must provide written notice of withdrawal from courses by 5:00pm (NZ time) on:

  • 15 January 2018 for Summer School papers
  • 16 March 2018 for First Semester papers
  • 23 March 2018 for Full Year papers
  • 27 July 2018 for Second Semester papers

If a student deletes in full and has completed the Course Approval process, tuition fees paid will be refunded in full, less a Tuition Refund fee of $100.00.

Change of Status

International students who are granted New Zealand residency while enrolled may be eligible to pay domestic fees for the current and subsequent years (see below). Proof of change of residential status can be demonstrated only by presenting an original passport with residence visa stamp.

To be considered for a refund of fees to the equivalent domestic fee level, the date of award of the residence visa (as printed on the visa) must be prior to:

  • 15 January 2018 for Summer School papers
  • 16 March 2018 for First Semester papers
  • 23 March 2018 for Full Year papers
  • 27 July 2018 for Second Semester papers

Award of the residence visa after these dates will mean ongoing charging at the international tuition rate for the duration of the paper(s). International students with pending New Zealand residency are advised to seek advice from the University about their situation prior to enrolment.

Australian students

Australian citizens and permanent residents pay the same fees as New Zealand citizens if they are studying in New Zealand. If they are studying distance learning papers from outside of New Zealand they will need to pay international fees. They are also not eligible to apply for the New Zealand Student Loan or Allowance unless they have been living in New Zealand for at least three years and are normally living in New Zealand.
