Congratulations on completing your University of Otago qualification.
Graduation is an important occasion, providing formal recognition of your achievements and an opportunity for you to celebrate with your family, friends and the University community.
We want to make your graduation a success. To help us ensure this, please read the following information carefully as it contains everything you need to know about the graduation ceremony and associated events.
Graduation also marks your admission to the full and permanent membership of the University. In the years ahead, the Office of Development and Alumni Relations will provide ongoing opportunities for you to maintain contact with the University and other members of the Otago alumni community.

Order of Proceedings
Assembly
2.50pm, DCC Moray Place car park, (25m from the corner of Lower Stuart Street and Moray Place). Marshalling of graduands begins promptly at 3.00pm.
Please ensure you arrive, in appropriate academic dress, with your graduation order number sticker affixed to the left side of your gown, by 2.50pm. If you arrive late, or are improperly dressed, there is no guarantee you will be able to take part in the ceremony. Once all graduands are in graduation order you will proceed to reserved seating in the Regent Theatre.
Opening of the Ceremony
The Chancellor, Council and staff of the University enter the Regent Theatre promptly at 4.00pm. Graduands and guests should be seated by 3.50pm at the very latest. The ceremony will begin with welcomes by the Chancellor and the Māori orator, followed by the National Anthem sung in Māori and English.
Conferring of Degrees and Awarding of Diplomas
The Vice-Chancellor or the relevant Pro-Vice Chancellor or Dean will announce graduands for each degree/diploma (eg "for graduation in the degree of Bachelor of Arts"). See Conferring degrees and awarding diplomas for further information.
Remainder of the Ceremony
The ceremony continues with the graduation address and concludes with the singing of Gaudeamus. Staff will then leave the Regent Theatre in procession, after which you and your guests are free to depart. The ceremony should conclude at approximately 5.30pm.
Collecting Regalia
It is important that you collect the regalia yourself, as you will need to try it on to ensure you have the correct size. Please bring photo ID with you to collect your regalia.

Returning Regalia
Please ensure that you return your regalia on time, as it will be required by another graduand for subsequent ceremonies. A further charge may apply for regalia returned late.
Regalia must be returned in the same condition as it was issued. The full cost of replacement, which exceeds $600, will be charged for any lost or damaged regalia.

Collecting Guest Tickets
Guest tickets are available for collection from the Clocktower Reception, main entrance, Clocktower Building (Water of Leith side), on the following dates and times:

Friday 24 May 8.30am - 5.00pm
Saturday 25 May 9.00am - 12 noon
Please note that you need to collect your tickets personally, and provide photographic identification. If it is necessary to have someone else collect tickets on your behalf, please email the Graduation Office, and provide the name of the person who will be collecting your tickets. Please note that anyone collecting tickets must provide photographic identification.

View the Historic First Floor Northern Wing of the Clocktower Building
Visitors to the University are invited to view the historic first floor northern wing of the Clocktower Building, built in 1879. This area will be open from 9.00am – 12.00 noon on Saturday 25 May, and graduands and their families are welcome to take photographs.
Guest tickets for both of the graduation ceremonies to be held on Saturday 4 May will be available for collection from the reception area in the main foyer of the Clocktower Building during these times, and visitors are welcome to proceed up the main staircase to the first floor.
At the top of the stairs turn right along the corridor leading to the University Council Chamber (the original University Library). The corridor walls are lined with photographs of the University’s first male and female graduates, successive Chancellors, Vice-Chancellors, Registrars and Council members.
The alcove in the Council Chamber is panelled with desktops from lecture theatres, on which former students have carved their names.
Unfortunately, it will not be possible to offer disabled/limited mobility access to the first floor.
Graduation Functions
The Graduation Reception is no longer being held after each ceremony. The University will be hosting a Graduation Brunch, details as below.

A brunch will be hosted by the University of Otago, which is open to all graduates and their families prior to the procession. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with your family, friends, and the University.

Thanksgiving Service
The University Chaplaincy team are pleased to invite you, your family and friends to a short informal service of thanksgiving on the day of graduation, followed by refreshments.

Time: 10.30am - 11.00am
Place: Hunter Café, corner of Frederick and Great King Streets
Please wear academic regalia. The service will finish in plenty of time for you to more outside to the School of Dentistry to join the procession along George Street.
The Graduation Procession
Please assemble outside the School of Dentistry on Great King Street on the day of the Ceremony. The procession will leave the School of Dentistry promptly at 11.30am accompanied by bagpipers and drummers.

Faculty, School, Divisional, and Departmental Functions
Graduands, their partners and parents are cordially invited to attend the appropriate Faculty, School, Divisional, or Departmental function. Only graduands in the subject are concerned and their guests are eligible to attend.
Law
The Dean and Staff of the Faculty of Law invite graduands in Law, the partners and parents to a reception following graduation.

Each graduand attends the reception as of right and may bring three guests.
Radiation Therapy
The Department of Radiation Therapy invites graduating Radiation Therapy students, their families and friends, to a graduation brunch.
