Information

The Elman Poole Travelling Scholarship provides funds to support PhD students in their 2nd or 3rd year of study, who wish to do field work outside of New Zealand.

The Elman Poole Travelling Scholarship represents a fantastic opportunity for students to travel abroad to gain experience or use facilities not normally available in New Zealand. A three to six month period abroad can have a huge benefit to a student's research and career. Dr Elman Poole and the University of Otago, co-founded this scholarship to provide funding that will promote, encourage and facilitate research for PhD students. Dr Poole passed away on 25 June 2019 aged 93 years.

Applicants must be:

  • enrolled full-time in PhD study at the University of Otago majoring in one of the following areas: physical or biological sciences, health sciences or music
  • intending to engage in study outside of New Zealand in their second or third year of PhD study
  • New Zealand citizens or New Zealand Residence Class Visa Holders
  • under the age of 35 on 1 February in the year of application

Preference will be given to candidates who were born in Otago or Southland.
