The University, City and Region

The University

Université Grenoble Alpes is the sixth best university in France. It is also the 4th best university in Engineering & IT nationally and 115th globally in QS World University Rankings. The origins of this scientific university can be traced back to 1811 when the scientist Joseph Fourier established a faculty of science in Grenoble.
Nowadays more than 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students participate to the life of this university. More than 2,000 are international or exchange students. Université Grenoble Alpes is not only famous for its alumni but also for its commitment to fundamental as well as applied research and innovation. Part of the university is the Observatoire ds Sciences de l’Univers de Grenoble (OSUG), a leading institution in the field of earth, space and environmental sciences.

The City of and Region

Grenoble is a city in southeastern France situated at the foot of the French Alps where the river Drac joins the Isere. Located in the Rhône-Alpes region, Grenoble is the capital of the Departmentof Isère. The proximity of the mountains has led to the city being known as the "Capital of Alps."
Grenoble's history encompasses a period of more than 2,000 years, and the city has been the capital of the Dauphiné since the eleventh century. Grenoble experienced a period of economic expansion in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which is symbolized by the holding of the X Olympic Winter Games in 1968. The city is now a significant scientific centre in Europe.
