Sea Level Rise Seminar Podcasts


Public lecture series on July 12th organized by the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors Coastal Otago Branch chaired by Professor John Hannah to discuss the implications of sea level rise for the City of Dunedin. Speakers include representatives from the Dunedin City Council, Otago Regional Council, MWH Surveying firm, Methodist Central Mission and a presentation of interactive software from Dr. Abby Smith of the School of Marine Science. Surveying School becomes accredited by the Chartered Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors


On May 10th the School was informed of its accreditation for a period of 5 years for all of its 10 Degree or Certificate programs by the United Kingdom based CICES.

Surveying staff in the news

Professional Practice Fellows Richard Hemi and Fraser Jopson, accompanied by postgrad students Joe Wright and David Shearer, recently completed a project in conjunction with the Department of Conservation and Dr. Ian Barber to scan dendroglyphs (ancient tree carvings on the Chatham Islands. Read about this interesting work in the University of Otago Magazine and listen to a report on it from Radio New Zealand.

Surveying software donation

The School is pleased to announce another generously provided site license fron ProgeCAD that allows our students to learn and use computer assisted design (CAD) software in the Urban Design and Engineering courses in the curriculum.

High School Students enjoy 'Hands on Science' project at the School of Surveying

As part of the University of Otago's annual 'Hands on Science' week (Jan 18-22 2010) for high school students, five budding scientists tried out the Surveying and GIS project. Under the title 'Placing the World at your Fingertips...', the students played with handheld GPS, handheld GIS, Total Stations, single beam echosounders, and all sorts of geospatial software.
