The Southern Alps is a relatively young orogeny that is created by continental collision. This deformation process results in a relatively narrow deformation zone including mountain uplift. The SAGENZ project was established to measure the uplift across a profile of the Southern Alps while the COD project attempts to measure variations in crustal strain in a region shown to have episodic faulting.
