SURV412 Geo-visualisation and Cartography
This course provides a theoretical and practical grounding in the various ways in which geographic information can be visualised. Beyond the conventional map display alternative representations, interfaces to geographic data, visual exploration of massive datasets and cartographic generalisation are covered.
Cource Objectives
- To cover the fundamental aspects of cartographic representation from mapmaking using visual variables and composition, to advanced geographic display (3D, 4D).
- To discuss the role of interfaces through which geographic visualisation can be made, and interactivity.
- To discuss cognition, including its influence on both interfaces and representation, cognitive maps and the egocentric viewpoint.
- To review visual data mining, the visualisation of uncertainty, and cartographic generalisation.
- To address the place of cartography / geovisualisation within GIS.
- Points:18
- Offered:Second semester every year
