Culture and Identity: Postcolonial Reflections in Aotearoa/New ZealandContemporary Aotearoa/New Zealand society is grappling with the notion of ‘identity’, whether that be as ‘New Zealanders’, ‘Māori’, ‘Pākehā’, or a raft of other identity markers such as ‘New Zealand born Pacific Peoples’. The proposed thesis will discuss and investigate how contemporary constructions of, in particular, Māori and Pākehā identity have been negotiated throughout a contested history of identity construction, and how these identities have contributed to the development of a ‘national identity’. In this analysis the thesis will concentrate on the simple question, how does identity confer meaning? |
