Visa Requirements
This page is intended as a guide only and all Visa Requirements must be checked with a Travel agent, the New Zealand Immigration Service website http://www.immigration.govt.nz/, or a New Zealand Embassy.
All visitors to New Zealand must carry a passport that is valid for at least three months beyond the date they intend to leave the country.
Exemptions
A visa or permit to visit New Zealand is not needed if a traveller is:
- A New Zealand citizen or Resident Permit holder
- An Australian citizen travelling on an Australian passport
- An Australian resident with a current Australian resident return visa
- A citizen of a country which has a visa waiver agreement with New Zealand.
A quick test to determine visa requirements can be undertaken at the Immigration New Zealand web site http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/visit/
Waivers
Currently travellers from more than 50 countries do not require a Visitor's Visa if they are staying in New Zealand for less than three months. Travellers from these countries do however require:
- A passport that is valid for at least three months after their planned departure from New Zealand
- An onward or return ticket to a country that they have permission to enter
- Sufficient money to support themselves during their stay - approximately NZ$1000 per month per person
- if they have stayed in New Zealand for up to three months previously they may need to apply for a visa
Eligibility for a visa waiver can be checked on the Visiting New Zealand section of the New Zealand Immigration Service website. A list of all eligible countries and other useful visa information can be found there. Travel agents, Airlines or a nearby New Zealand Embassy can also advise about visa requirements.
British citizens and other British passport holders who have evidence of the right to live permanently in the UK may be allowed to stay in New Zealand for up to six months.
Visitor's Visa Applications
If a home country is not on the visa waiver list, or if a traveller wishes to stay longer than three months, a Visitor's Visa is required. Application forms can be downloaded from the New Zealand Immigration Service website http://www.immigration.govt.nz/, or contact a New Zealand Embassy.
