Allen Hall

Allen Hall Theatre (the home of Theatre Studies) is:

  • The hub of the University of Otago's theatrical performance work

  • Located in the beautiful bluestone buildings of the old university complex (see map), next to Marama Hall, the Music Department's performance venue

  • A fully equipped theatre which also houses teaching space, rehearsal rooms and staff offices

  • The site of literally thousands of performances from full-length plays to Lunchtime Theatre performances to laboratory work created in a workshop or class situation

  • Historically, the former student union building; Sir Laurence Olivier visited and spoke in Allen Hall in 1948, with students hanging out the windows and from the rafters to listen to him.

  • The building was converted into a theatre in 1974
